The Island Approach…

From Table Top Talk, November 1964

By Joe Morschauser

How about trying the “Island Approach”? This would involve one player setting up his troops completely all over the table top; the other force coming in either as a naval landing operation or airborne attack from any, or all, sides of the table, or as a land attack coming in from several roads leading off ‘on various sides of the table.

The Occupying Force would be set up by the Player alone, while the Attacking Force would have been set up before the game on the map of the battlefield so that neither side knows the dispositions of the other.

In fighting a naval landing you could have one (or several) smaller tables (the same height as the large one) which could be set next to the each that was being landed on, which would hold landing craft, etc.
